Handmade Scarf Made from Vintage Japanese Kimono Pieces from Dolce Vita Silks

This unique and colorful garment was created with pieces of recycled silk fabric. Obtained from vintage/antique Japanese kimonos, garment silk, and even pieces of my own handpainted scarf "flops."

Kimonos are first purchased by the pound. After washing them, I carefully remove the stitching, reserving the best parts.

The silk is cut into blocks, and arranged into pleasing color, texture and print combinations. The blocks are then sewn together. Last, hand dyed silk lining is applied.

Unique kimonos and silk fabrics are obtained at varying times, each scarf is one of a kind, and irreproducible.

Enjoy this smaill example of Asian textile history!

Mary Northrup has been creating magin with silks since 1985. She does not recall the name of the intructor at her first workshops, but she will never forget the awe of first witnessing the flow of fine French dyes from her brush onto stretched white silk!

Though she still greatly enjoys drawing and painting on sils, she has recently dsicovered a new fascination of designing and creating sils scarves from antique and vintage Japanese silks, as well.

The beauty and feel of these textiles, most from the 1920's to the 1940's, is unsurpassed. As she carefully deconstructs the hand sewn kimonos to remove the still usable parts, she cannot help but think of the persons that originally placed those seams so long ago.

Mary Northrup, of Dolce Vita Silks has had many examples of her work featured in Belle Armoire magazine. Her studio is located in a rural 1870's vintage home that she and her fiancee, david, are happily renovating.

Handmade, One of a Kind Handbag with Bamboo Handles by Mary Northrup of GemmaLucia Handbags

Colorful, one-of-a-kind handmade carpetbag style handbag. bamboo handles and fine hardware with a handmade ceramic heart button.

The GemmaLucia Handbag Story

My mother, Anna Maria GemmLucia Onorato Rosati immigrated to the US in 1956. She has always complained bitterly that none of her 5 children named a child after her. Thus, GemmaLucia Handbags was born. She seems happy that my enterprise was named after her, but I doubt that it generated the same thrill that naming a human child after her would have.

I first design each style of handbag based upon the features I prefer in a handbag myself. I then carefully scour all available resources to procure the finest tapestry, print, and batik fabrics. Painstaking detail is applied to workmanship and couture details, with sturdy pockets, rugged steaming, and durable hardware and handles. Lastly, are applied whimsical, exquisite buttons, made of uncommon materials, including caved jade, bone, horn, wood, shell, ceramic, glass, and Italian enamels, giving a distinctive finishing touch.

I hope that you enjoy carrying this unique GemmaLucia handbag as much as I enjoyed handcrafting it. It is truly "one of a kind".
